This is one of my favorite books and it is part of one of my all-time favorite series. I fall in love with this story, and especially Arabella and Turnip, each time I read it. Turnip really is the hero's nickname, and he turns out to be perhaps one of the most heroic, romantic, loveable, and swoon-worthiest heroes of all.

This is delightful, and despite the fun completely touches my heart. I find myself laughing, swooning, and shedding tears throughout. This glorious story turns out to be what the world needed, and includes Christmas pudding as a projectile weapon, spies, and Jane Austen as a secondary character. This could be read as a standalone. I also recommend the audio book.

The Mischief of the Mistletoe A Pink Carnation Christmas Lauren Willig 9780525951872 Books Reviews

I have been a fan of this series since I first found out it and read the first book. So far the best of the series! I didn't think I would like Turnips story as much as I did, but it had me laughing and cheering for the main characters in a way I haven't done for several books (by different authors). I highly recommend this author and this series!
Lauren Willig is one of my favorite authors and I loved this book as much as I have loved all of her other books in this series. A historical fiction romance with the inclusion of Jane Austen in this storyline adds a lot of charm and humor for fans of Austen's work like myself. The present day storylne of Eloise which is in all the other books in this series is not in this book, however, I did not miss that part of the story. I liked being able to immerse myself totally in the past with this book, especially since it is set in Bath, England. Overall, this book was awesome and really funny; I found myself laughing out loud on several occasions.
Who would have thought I would enjoy a story whereby the lead character's nickname is a vegetable with such unpopular appeal...a turnip. If you have read any of the books poor Reginald Fitzhugh is always cast to the side and ridiculed for acting like a ...turnip. By the end of the story you are cheering on ...turnip. I also LOVED how the reader gets the true inner workings of the sub-plots of three of the series past books "Blood Lilly, Night Jasmine & Crimson Rose!" It was just brilliant! I thought I would miss not reading about Collin and Eloise but the book flowed more smoothly. It is a must read for those that have read any of the "Pink Carnation Series" books! Just read the other three first, I promise then this one will read like a true gem.
I love Lauren Willig's writing! She has an innate ability to combine romance, history and intrigue with humor. I have read the first three books in her "Pink Carnation" series and enjoyed them thoroughly. I have just begun the fourth book and have ordered the rest of this series.
This was a wonderful book to read for Christmas! It has so many things that I love! It has romance, mystery, intrigue, suspense, and humor and it is all wrapped around a Christmas Pudding! Yes, I said a Christmas Pudding. It is a wonderful mystery that is written in the style of Jane Austen, and the mystery begins with a message found in a Christmas Pudding! This is the first book in the Pink Carnation series that I have read, and it was wonderful. The book does not have to be read in any particular order, as I was able to know what was going on without having read any of the other books. I loved the characters in this book, and even Jane Austen herself makes a few appearances. But, my favorite character is Turnip Fitzhugh. He is handsome, smart, athletic and just seems like a perfect hero. I will definitely be reading more of Lauren Willig's books! I am a big Jane Austen fan and of course I have read all of her books, so I am always looking for books that are written in the same fashion as hers. Sometimes I am disappointed, but not with Lauren Willig's stories. In the book Jane Austen Made Me Do It, Willig's story was one of my most favorites and after reading this one, I suspect that she will be permanently in my favorite authors list. I look forward to reading her other books.

Here is a little sample of the humor that is found in this book. "As he clasped her right hand with his left, prancing in a circle with Danforth and Lucy Ponsonby, she smiled up at him and unselfconsciously gave a little puff of breaath to blow a stubborn lock of hair out of her eye.

It was the most uncously seductive thing he had ever seen. Turnip nearly lost his foorint.

Of course at this point, she could be debone a kipper with a fish knife and he would find it seductive, he was that far gone."

This seventh book in the Pink Carnation series was a wild Christmas romp featuring puddings with hidden messages. Arabella Dempsey is in Bath looking for a position at a girl's school. After spending a number of years as companion to her aunt, her aunt has married a much younger man who had also raised Arabella's expectations but decided to go where the money was now. This leaves Arabella at loose ends since her expectations of an inheritance from her aunt will no longer happen.

Almost the first person Arabella meets in Bath is Reginald "Turnip" Fitzhugh who literally sweeps her off her feet. But, being a gentleman, he quickly helps her back up. Turnip's sister is a student at the school where Arabella is now a junior mistress. Also at the school is Lizzy Reid whose brother we met in THE BETRAYAL OF THE BLOOD LILY.

Unlikely as it seems, French spies are also in the picture searching for a list of Crown agents that the father of one of the other students lost at the school. Arabella and Turnip are quickly drawn in on a hunt for spies.

Lots of characters from earlier books in the series make appearances in this one and Turnip, who has been a comedic side character in earlier books, finally gets a chance to show his true heroic self. The dialog in this one was often quite witty. The whole story had a lot of humor but also a very sweet romance.

The only thing I missed from this episode of the Pink Carnation series was a plot featuring Colin and Eloise in the present.
