I am a very picky reader.I don't usually write reviews but in this case,I feel like I owe the author,since she gave me several hour of pleasure reading this book.It kept me up later than normal,because I had trouble putting it down.This book was so well written it was enjoyable from start to finish.A lot of books have a great start and a good ending,but drag in the middle.This book did not.I usually read Christian fiction,and this book did not have much of a Christian theme but it was very clean.i will look for more books by this author and recommend them to others.

This was an amazing book. The characters come to life as the story develops. The story is a life's journey of a family, a large Norwegian family, and their trials and joys. It revolves around a walk the mother Helga and her daughter Clara take Crome Spokane Washington to New York City, to earn ten thousand dollars to save their home from being foreclosed on.
Well written with great smilies. We choose this book for book club and I know we'll have much to talk about. Is the story a tragedy or a conquest? All of us have weird families with sibling rivalry, parental favorites, the relationship between parents and children. This book explores so many aspects of family that every reader will find a character or situation that relates to them. Very thought provoking.
Jane has done it again; I didn't want to put the book down. When the actual walk was over but the book not nearly ended, I couldn't wait to read what else happened, where the REAL story was. Jane is simply great at choosing somewhat obscure or seemingly secondary yet strong women and inviting us along while she explores relationships. I just love that it was the daughter's rather than the mother's story she chose to tell. Jane's extensive research, innate human insight and a million steps on the very ground that Clara walked make for a wonderfully written story that truly put me in Clara's shoes. Jane's voice left me wanting to walk that ground, too, as her books always do. I had the immense pleasure of talking with Jane at a book signing in Spokane - along with two other authors of the Estby story. Afterward, a stop in the cemetery where the Estby family is buried satisfied my thirst Jane's historical fiction always awakens.
I have read several of her books and they bring to life so many lives that lived through times past with their stories. Simple people that faced their times in history with such grace. It is so nice to read about real characters with their challenges and trials. Everyone has a story. Jane Kirkpatrick really brings them to life
Jane Kirkpatrick is one of my favorite authors. I love the way she takes true facts and builds a good read around strong women.

"The Daughter's Walk" was a book I took my time reading. You become so involved with the characters that you feel you know them personally.

I am thankful this book has been written. Can you even imagine the challenge of the women in this story?
Reading about the women who came before me and gave so much to ensure I would have the freedom I experience today strengthens me. I feel a bond to them and wish so much I could thank them for their sacrifice. I appreciate the characters in this story because what they did was not an event against men. It was a challenge among women.
Clara joins her Mom for the trip of a lifetime in order to save the family farm. They walk 3200 miles across America. The trip is fraught with peril and hardship, but also the kindness of strangers. The women grow very close during the mutual experience. But on their return home, their family which also endured tragedy in their absence cannot forgive them for the "abandonment" for a year. Clara is expelled from the family and has to build a life for herself as an unmarried woman in early 20th century. She draws on her experience to become a successful business woman and eventually returns to her family as a prodigal daughter. The story includes many strong and independent women in a time when women couldn't even vote. Their relationships strengthen and sustain each other for whatever life throws at them.
A Daughter's Walk is the story of Clara, whose life begins when her mother drags her on a walk across the country to raise money for the family farm. But the story is not really about the walk it is about Clara's life once the walk is done. When she returns from the walk, she discovers that the life she left is no longer open to her. The ladies of high society who once employed her as a domestic will no longer employ her once she has done such an unladylike thing; and family tragedy forces her out of her home. So Clara sets off on the real walk of the book a walk to discover her own life. She goes to school, makes unexpected friends, starts to learn a hard trade in the wilderness and nearly loses her life in the process. She is offered love by a good man but cannot decide if it is the love that she wants. She achieves success and loses it; and constantly searches for a way to build or return home.

I did start this book expecting a different kind of story - something in the vein of Follow the River or A Thousand White Women, historical adventure novels. It's not that kind of book. I was a little disappointed to find that the actual walk was more a prologue to the story, a starting point, than the story itself. The walk was completed about a third of the way through the novel, maybe a bit more, and was not the centerpiece of the book. But once I got over that adjustment, I enjoyed this book a lot. It was a detailed and convincing exploration of how one woman tried to make her way in the world at a time when women had very few choices open to them. It is about a woman who travels the world, quite literally, looking for a place that feels like home.
