"Curiosity Killed the Cat Sitter" and it was Fantastic. I first read the second book in the series "Duplicity Dogged the Dachshund" because we have dachshunds. I loved it so much I bought the first book.
Dixie is a 32 year old former Sheriff's deputy, widower and now pet sitter with a vivid personality. The supporting characters of her gay brother and partner as a fireman and undercover cop really added to the story and you could picture Dixie talking with them and dining with them. In addition to a murder or two that will keep you guessing, I also enjoyed reading about a young gay character that Dixie met. He lived in a house with two hateful, bigoted parents, and he tried keeping his secret until an accident. - Although a minor part of the fast-paced main storyline, the author did a great job explaining the stress and horror teenagers deal with, who grow up in a home with unaccepting and even hostile, bigoted parents. Again, that was a fringe storyline. There were funny parts, serious parts, intrigue, mystery, murders, and of course cats and dogs.
I will be ordering ALL of Blaize Clements "Dixie Hemingway" novels. You should read them, too!

Ms. Clement deftly transports you to Sarasota, Florida, where you meet characters who become more flesh and blood with each turn of the page. The issues they're dealing with, and the mystery being solved, are surprisingly not trite. There's sex and violence, but it's tastefully alluded to rather than graphic. Despite this novel's breezy, cozy feel, there's just the right blend of darkness, humor, and intelligence to make this the start of a series you'll want to continue.
I have read and enjoyed almost all of this series of cozy (well, semi cozy) mysteries. If you have visited Siesta Key (or live there, as I do), you will enjoy these. If you like pets, you will enjoy these. Blaize wrote convincingly about a young, agile woman and her psychology expertise shows through. Her son seems to be following the same path. The protagonist is a single woman who is inevitably in some personal danger. The covers are kind of stupid but cute. These are a bit formulaic, so my reviews will be too.
I have had this book sitting on my for a while - waiting for a point where I needed a light, easy read. While I didn't get the quite the light, easy read I expected, I did get a good plot, interesting characters and just enough grit to make this book really interesting. As one reviewer noted, the main character does have some colorful language, but nothing seriously offensive, just raw enough to seal in some strong emotions. There is a strong thread of tragedy woven through the story, and the main character, but enough light and honesty to keep the book interesting, but not depressing. The dialogue was realistic and believable, the characters honest, human, and appealing. I'm an animal lover, and the author's descriptions of the pets involved in the pet sitting business are heartwarming and insightful. The author is clearly open to people with alternative lifestyles, and where she blends this into her story it is well done - not preachy, just honest.

This isn't a deep literary work, but it is entertaining, engrossing and deals with human flaws and virtues in a well-crafted story that almost, but not quite, fits a "cozy mystery" genre. I've already purchased the second in the series, and look forward to spending more time with this author and her delightful characters and story lines.
I did not purchase this book. I found it at one of my favorite places, the library. I'm a retired librarian and I love cats, so the title caught my eye. It is the first of six in this entertaining series.

The publisher's blurb was no help at all, so I won't quote from it. The main character was introduced to the reader as follows

"I'm Dixie Hemingway, no relation to you know who. I'm a pet-sitter. . . . Until three years ago when the world crashed around me I was a deputy with the Sarasota County Sheriff's Department. Now I take care of animals. . . . They don't ask a lot of questions or expect much from me, and I don't have to interact with people any more than I choose to . . . . I've never thought myself as a widow. Widows are old women . . . . I'm a formerly loved."

There were touches of laugh-out-loud humor

"Until a few years ago, nobody in Siesta Key ever thought about burning security lights. But since everybody north of Georgia seemed to have looked up one day and said, 'By Gawd, I'm moving to Florida!' we've started having break-ins here and there, even a murder now and then. So now people on Siesta Key leave night lights burning so potential burglars and rapists can see better."

There were humorous insights into animal behavior

"To a dog, food is a necessity of life, and they're not too picky about how it tastes or what it's served in. A weighted plastic feeding bowl suits a dog just fine, and you can give them the exact same food twice a day, and they'll think you're the greatest chef in the world. Cats on the other hand are snooty gourmands. . . . Cats don't shove their bowls around on the floor, either. They sit in front of them daintily, giving the impression of having patted a linen napkin in place. Cat owners feed their cats in dishes ordinarily reserved for royalty, and the cats accept them as their due."

The author provided many interesting FYI facts about pet health and behavior and history. Did you know that in medieval days a "fewterer" was the "keeper and handler of greyhounds?"

The author described surroundings with attention to every detail

"The sun had just set, dropping abruptly below the line of sea as if it had been treading water and at the last minute had gone under. The sky was streaked with waving banners of cerise and turquoise and lavender, and a couple of brave stars were showing their faces. On the beach, the tide was spreading lacy ruffles on the sand like a lone flamenco dancer entertaining herself."

The only problem for me was the author's use of vulgarity. Not necessary when one is as talented as this writer obviously is as shown in the writing style quoted. Thank you.

However, I purchased it as part of a gift for a friend, and I had it sent directly to her, and then I forgot that it was one of the four I had sent to her. Sigh.
