This is a true story written by a direct descendant of the family. This spans 15 years before, during and after the Civil War which ended in 1865. Two families lived in Carilise, PA where they were neighbours. One family, Mr. Hendernon, his wife Margaret, and their son Webster (Webbie) lived on a large piece of property, behind the house was a corn field, a lake, a large oak tree, and some woods which separated the two properties.

Beyond the lake was his neighbor's house, Mr. Chance Thomason, his wife Sarai, and son, Junior. Mr. Thomason had a wonderful talent of working with wood and he taught Junior all about trees, different types of wood, and the art of creating things from wood products. His father was hoping someday Junior would take over the business.

The boys became very close friends, they were always together, soon there was a path through the corn field between the two houses. They spent time with each other almost daily. Webbie's grandfather taught the boys about running a business. Robert goes to fight in the Civil War, Chance also leaves to fight in the war. The Civil War battles were interesting, especially the young boys fighting along with the men. The women heard the soldiers were coming, Margaret and Sarai left together with the boys in a wagon to go to a relative's house to protect themselves and be safe.

This is a good story but sometimes it was hard to follow due to flash backs; there was no warning, suddenly you would be in a another time period with different people. The story was good, the characters well defined and an enjoyable plot. I enjoy historical stories, I always learn from the author's research. I recommend this book to everyone.

Soldier Heart Michele McKnight Baker Books Reviews

I see a lot of good reviews for this book, but it was one of the worst books I have ever read. I really wish I hadn't read it at all. Several times I thought of stopping, but persevered and pressed on, hoping it would get better. It didn't. It got worse. There were six main characters and two semi-main characters, and they were not well developed. How could they be, with six main characters? The book jumped around from character to character and time frame to time frame. It was depressing. And the ending was totally left unfinished and was extremely depressing. I was left up in the air about what happened to any and all of them. Not that anything good had happened to any of them throughout the entire book. I guess if the author's point was to demonstrate the total ravages of war, and that nobody ever recovers emotionally, then she hit the nail on the head. But I prefer to feel good and uplifted after reading a book. This was not that book. Prepare to be depressed. I do not recommend this book at all.
This book was really good. The characters and story line were easy to follow. The reason for the low review, the cussing. I am of a high opinion it doesn't belong in Christian books. One or times I can overlook but consistently. I was halfway through reading when I finally had enough.
Carlisle, PA. Junior Thompson (freed slave, Chance/Sarai’s son) attended church with his parents Robert Chance Thompson (pap, woodworker) & Sarai Thompson (mam).
Preacher Wing was quite flamboyant in his preaching style.
Mrs. Margaretha Brumbach (German widow, Friedrich’s niece, Teacher), Abigail Brumbach (daughter), Representative Robert Henderson (pa, R, former Union General) Mrs. Henderson (ma), Webster “Webbie” Henderson (wealthy family, son/brother), Lizzy Henderson (baby daughter/sister), Nathan Henderson (Uncle, former Union Captain, shell-shock), & Dr. Cook were all in the congregation pews.

Mrs. Brumbach taught their combined grade school.
The students are Junior, Webbie, Abigail, Evers Johnson & many other colored/white children.
Years later Chance had his own construction crew. Andrew “Clipper” Clark (Forman, former journeyman), & Graysom (freed slave, Chance’s BMF), & others work for him.
Robert Henderson (Attorney, former Union Brigadier General, 15th. district Provost Marshal) felt he was quite the suitor for Margaret “Maggie” Turnbrough Webster (26, Henry’s sister, pianist).
Fast forward, the Civil War begins/ends.

Who will return to carry on their lives? Or who will perish in 1 of the bloodiest US battles ever?

I did not receive any type of compensation for reading & reviewing this book. While I receive free books from publishers & authors, I am under no obligation to write a positive review. Only an honest one.

A very awesome book cover, great font & writing style. A very well written Civil War era historical fiction (true-to-life) book. It was very easy for me to read/follow from start/finish & never a dull moment. There were no grammar/typo errors, nor any repetitive or out of line sequence sentences. Lots of exciting scenarios, with several twists/turns & a large set of unique characters to keep track of. This could also make another great Civil War era movie, or better yet a mini TV series. A very easy rating of 5 stars.

I can't think of a story I've read that needs to be read more so than this one. Read it. Have your children read it (+13). As a white grandparent of two biracial granddaughters, this story touches on my every belief that ALL lives matter and we can ALL get along.

Meet Webbie and Junior. They meet and they dont see color. They see a kindred spirit; they see a friend. In time, their parents grew to see each other the same way. They weren't prejudiced. They just knew the world they lived in was. Then the Civil War happened. They fought on the same side. They protected each other. They nursed each other. They became finally what was so easy for their sons. Friends.

The Civil War. So long ago and yet, still fought in the hearts and attitudes of many today in 2016. There were many people like Maggie back then. If there weren't, there would still be slavery. If Sarai could see that, surely people today, who has not personally known slavery nor have their recent ancestors, should see that as well.
