King Richard III has been painted as a monster by the historians of the Tudor dynasty. This trilogy paints him as an advocate of justice. Either way he was struggling to hold onto the throne while Henry Tudor and others worked to take it. The novel is the third in the trilogy and a vivid description of the life and times toward the end of the War of the Roses. I don't know whether Richard III ordered his nephews killed or not, but he did not carry out his responsibility as protector of the young king and the relm. Having read several books (fiction and nonfiction) about this period, I enjoyed this author's point of view. Be sure not to skip the notes as the end of the book. Most interesting.

For amateur historians or just those people interested in Shakespeare's much, and most likely falsely, maligned monarch Richard III, this is a great read. You get to experience the last two years of trial and suffering that were Richard's life leading up to the Battle of Bosworth Field, and to that August day that changed The course of British history forever. Mostly, you get an idea of life from Richard's perspective, and with that, you get to see that he was not the villain that history has since painted him to be. It is a very fascinating book about a wonderfully complex and fascinating man.
The events presented in this book makes you cringe to realise there can be people so greedy to commit such treachery towards a person with the best intentions towards his country and people, and who trusted them and gave them everything they wanted and asked of him. The most shocking thing is the cowardly slander by Tudor after he was dead and could not defend himself I am sure those who backed Henry Tudor must have completely regretted it when they were able to see the kind of person this new king was, totally different from Richard in the most negative way. He burned all the precious evidence of the truth of the previous reign he could get his hands on, he exterminated those who had been loyal and related to Richard without mercy, took away many of the privileges that those who had put him on the throne had had before and even had many of them pay with their lives at the least fault. Even his mother-in-law ended in a far worse position than she could have imagined. I think the Tudors were the worst thing that happened to England. They paid their karmas very clearly when Henry VII lost two sons soon after birth and his heir, Arthur, that probably his mother Elizabeth of York gave him the name of the king her late uncle Richard admired and imitated due to his fairness and justice, died at the young age of 15 or 17. The surviving Henry VIII went on paying the karma unable to have male heirs and the only one he begot, was sickly and also died at the age of 15. His daughter Mary by Catherine of Aragon, was unpopular after murdering an astounding number of Protestants earning the nickname of 'Bloody Mary' by which she is still known, and the next queen, her half sister Elizabeth by Ann Boleyn, though she had a long reign, she died without heirs, and though powerful in her time. she never had a husband to fulfill her life. Thankfully, that was the end of the Tudors. All that people remember them for is Henry VII's heavy taxes, returning the 'benevolences' that Richard had eradicated as unfair, his son Henry VIII's many tragic wives, his son, Edward VI's early death, his daughter's bloodthirstiness and his finally last daughter's lonely unhappy long life. On the contrary, the Plantagenets are remembered as the brave warrior kings and in spite of the Tudor's tampering, Richard iii will always be remembered by the best laws England was ever given, used to this day, a gift of justice to his country and people which have been copied and are used in most of the world.
i bought all three books in this series, but this one was so awfully tedious, i'm not even bothering with the ohter two -- also -- i realize the author's intent was to show richard as someone other than the odious monster shakespeare gave us, but honestly -- this richard was so good and pure, i'm surprised she didn't have him walking on water!! -- could a character be more one-dimensional??!!
Awesome, emotional read! While I may not buy this twist on Richard III, I have thoroughly enjoyed this series. Ms. Worth did show his bad decision making. Richard III was definitely idealistic and trusted too much. Happy reading!
This book and the preceding two in the trilogy are fabulous. The writing is just beautiful - lovely prose and a pleasure to read. The plot moved along quickly, giving us insights into the complex emotional worlds of the main characters. The richness of detail adds to the story - I almost felt I was back in Medieval England. Sandra Worth states that these books took her 10 years to write, and I can well believe it, they are beautifully crafted works. I read all three books one after the other and didn't want the story to end...
All 3 of the books in this series are well-researched and artfully realized. The first 2 in particular (The Rose of York Love and War, The Rose of York Crown of Destiny) offer fascinating insight into the life of Richard lll. The period covered in the final book is perhaps better known, but I particularly enjoyed the author's subtle segue, allowing us to see familiar historical events from a different perspective.

I would definitely suggest reading all 3 books; combined they feel like one long novel.
