The Education of Hailey Kendrick Eileen Cook Books

I forgot how much I like Eileen Cook's work. I have only read What would Emma Do, and I read it such a while back that I forgot how much her words got to me. Her stories are relevant/current and laugh-out-loud funny. I have so many highlighted quotes from this book, I don't know if I can share them all without telling you the whole story! I also really like how she incorporates a theme/message into the story, without spelling it out to the readers. In this book it was about appreciation and going after the things you want in life. Hailey Kendrick certainly got an education, but it wasn't your typical high school class. Hailey learned about life, and as much as you can try, you never really have full control over it.

I loved the characters in this story as well, they are so well constructed. They are neither good nor bad, they have a little bit of both. For example, Hailey is one of these girls that has everything, but doesn't realize it. Despite not having appreciation for the things she does have in life, I would never classify her as snobby or judgmental. Her boyfriend Tristan is agreeable, which isn't necessarily the worst thing a boyfriend could be, but Hailey needed someone more assertive. Without giving away too much more, I liked that despite everything Hailey did, Tristan was a good guy. Sometimes authors make old boyfriends horrible, so you have no choice but to emphasize with the main character even if her actions are wrong.

Overall this book was a very enjoyable read and makes me want to go pick up Getting Revenge on Lauren Wood, or reread What Would Emma Do. I highly recommend you do the same.

The Education of Hailey Kendrick Eileen Cook Books Reviews

I never heard of this author and may never will start reading any of her book, if not for a review here, on another book of hers, Do or Di, due to the reviewer mention it that it make her laugh out loud several times and i was in the mood on reading something funny. Now, hilarious is a personal thing and although i do find some parts funny in that book, i came to appreciate more of how Eileen Cook writes and i admit, something got to do with Princess Diana also got me up to read that book, never thought surprise, surprise i found other precious gems along the way. Her writing style of philosophy is what makes me keep on reading her books. This book is my second choice.

Though school have seem so faraway but still, when i think back on my student's time, i can relate to the story of friendship, relation with others, reflection of how Hailey's decision, action, thoughts etc. that can be found in almost anyone's mind. The philosophy that i found in this book is not as much as Do or Di but still it opens up my mind and give me new perspectives. Although it may not be something totally new, for some, i may knew it all along (someone said something in the same way before) but you know, human need to be reminded of the trivial but important things in life too, since over the years we tend to fill it up with other important things and have forgotten what we learn earlier in our life.

What i don't get it, even though i have already guess the reason why Hailey's dad don't want to communicate as much after Hailey's mum died, i mean she is your only daughter, only close-to-kin left, don't you want to be more than a part of everything in her life before she totally grew up and drift away, like starting her own family? I've lost a parent too so i understand the grief and i don't think i want to leave a parent alone and trying to avoid any sort of conversation because it is difficult, although her dad probably tries to sort things out right in his own way and bidding his time in facing the music, facing his daughter.

Beside that, i guess i don't have much faith in friendship. Though i know it seem much nicer and rounded in fiction novel, reality can be a 360 degrees thing. I do envy those with their best buddies in real life. I didn't think too well of Kelsie and Joel initially. Kelsie seem to be the one waiting for that opportunity to get with Tristan and pretend to be a go-getter for both of them in the beginning. After the kissing scandal, Kelsie pretend to have a talk on Hailey's behalf, it didn't really went in that direction, in the end, it turns out to be something more and it was Hailey who found out (seeing them getting a little more than friendly through the window), Drew's observation and Joel's confirmation on the matter and finally with Hailey's unlucky escapade that cause her to fall from a building, that Kelsie came to visit Hailey due to guilt, thinking her best friend commit suicide after hearing that she and Tristan got together, like seriously? You have to wait till someone's death is near before you tell them the truth? She still pretend nothing has happen and be very defensive during the time when she came to deliver magazine at dawn to Hailey of tabloid's gossip of her and Tristan. She has her moment to confess, which she didn't. Of course, Hailey also hid her secret of kissing Joel under the statue, she did it out of his sponsorship thing and also he happens to be Tristan's best friend. Like Kelsie, Joel also waited that long for someone, unlike Kelsie, she's lucky that she got Tristan but Joel, he could only keep on waiting for the right person to appear. Till the end, i finally see something that can be very fragile and breakable in a friendship but when you pull away from everyone else, no one can and will break the way to reach you unless you reach out to everyone first. I guess being narrow-minded certainly won't help in this matter. I begin to see things (friendship or certain silent but important issues on my life through this book) more clearly and that i guess i needed to do some work on.

All in all, it's a very inspirational book, i loved it and i would love to read more of her books, she certainly teaches me alot more on life and other things, i might have dismiss as unimportant or too small to care and to 'keep coloring inside the lines', who knows what i might have created in my life if i think out of the box?
A really great read. Recommend it to anyone looking for a fun, easy and good story.
It really keeps you good company and leaves you with a good taste.
I've been a fan of all of Eileen Cook's books and this one did not disappoint. It has all the good stuff that I've come to know as regular ingredients in a Cook novel great characters, real issues and laugh out loud moments that are so rare in other books. Hailey Kendrick is a strong, smart and loyal character - the kind you'd totally want as a best friend, but it seems that in being what everyone wants her to be, she's missed out on figuring out what she wants to be. With the help of a new friend, the kind of guy she never would have expected to hang out with, Hailey begins to figure out her life and realizes that real living means taking real risks. Another great title from Cook that reminded me a bit of The Disreputable History of Frankie Landau-Banks - another great boarding school book. I can't wait to see what's next from this author.

If you haven't already, check out Eileen's other books What Would Emma Do? and Getting Revenge on Lauren Wood
