I had the pleasure of seeing and hearing Ms. Kaplan talk about her book here in Chicago. Then I borrowed it from the Bezazian branch of the Chicago Public Library. I bought it from Amazon only after that.

I wanted to have it handy for reference in my own writings.

It is an amazing, true tale of amazing real "white" women who defied the still bright "color line" that runs through the middle of America. The story of Nancy Cunard alone is worthy of a major motion picture. But even now, Hollywood seems afraid to touch that much truth about US.

Miss Anne in Harlem The White Women of the Black Renaissance Carla Kaplan 9780060882389 Books Reviews

Picked up this book because I saw someone else reading it and was intrigued. The book helps to explain the time when music was changing and the people responsible were evolving and changing history too.
This book is most informative and well written and documented. It forces the reader to consider the complexities of race and gender relations. Although it is about a past time in our history, the roots of the issues and problems with which it is concerned are very much alive and well. It also helps to explain why the women's movement has had such a difficult time addressing race and gender issues together. Read it. You won't be sorry.
Interesting, little known information about very influential, behind-the-scenes women. Well researched, it raises the question "What is black literature?" Or more fundamentally, who is black?
Intellectually engaging and about people I really l don't know. Very to the point today was we try to move into a more interracial society let people have more individual freedom in what ethnicity they want to live.
Was fascinating reading of an overlooked contribution ( both good and not- so- good) that white women made to this important period in Afro- American history. Will read more by this author.
Very comprehensive biographies of incredibly interesting and dynamic white women who played significant part in Harlem Renaissance. Carla Kaplan's meticulous research results in the unique story behind the story of this much-studied place and time. Issues of race, class and gender are presented in all their complexity and within the context of the era. I have done considerable reading on civil rights and US Black history and was even aware of the term "Miss Anne," but was totally unaware of all but one of the subjects in this wonderful book. And what I knew of Nancy Cunard was a caricature. I would recommend Miss Anne in Harlem to anyone who wants to know more about how competing theories of race/gender/identity can coexist and even contribute to innovation, creative growth and understanding of American history. Fascinating illustrations and photos.
Dr. Kaplan is a clear, conscious, and well informed writer. If you're interested in learning about race relations during the Harlem Renaissance from a new perspective, or even in a way they aren't usually talked about, I highly recommend this book. I actually just recommend this book in general. It's that good. Certainly deserving of all its acclaim!
